See Through Trio is pleased to announce the release of their third album. Titled Near Northern Static, this new recording features ten original compositions by bassist Pete Johnston, and is an extension of the sonic territory the group documented on their previous recordings Our Own Devices (2007) and Lines and Spaces (2009). Recorded in June 2012, the music on Near Northern Static explores the margins between composition and improvisation. Drawing on the influences of the Jimmy Giuffre 3, Ornette Coleman, and Carla Bley, See Through Trio’s improvisations push at the boundaries established by the compositions to create soundscapes that have strong foundations, yet sound different with each hearing. The performances captured on this recording are a snapshot from the road the trio has been travelling since forming in Toronto in 2004.
See Through Trio is Mark Laver on saxophone, Tania Gill on piano, and Pete Johnston on double bass. The trio formed in the fall of 2004, and have since performed in many different new music venues in Toronto, including the TRANZAC, Somewhere There, the Arraymusic Studio, Tequila Bookworm, and at the Distillery Jazz Festival. We have also ventured further afield, with a summer tour of Nova Scotia in 2007 culminating in a performance at the Atlantic Jazz Festival, and a tour of British Columbia in 2008.
